Fun, Family, & Friends!

The cold has set in and we have even had a few snow flurries here in Wisconsin but the nasty weather held off for our fun day at Honeydew Farm on Saturday! Honeydew Farm is owned and operated by our dear friends who kindly opened their home to all their family and friends on Saturday to share in food, fun, and how they are living a healthy lifestyle. I always love visiting our friends farm, I always feel at peace when I am there and forget any troubles in my life. Maybe it is being outdoors, maybe it is the animals, or maybe the wonderfully kind people but I always feel happier when I leave there. Late this summer I even got to have my first experience at chicken butchering. Despite the kind of grossness of it, it was a very interesting time, I may even do it again next year!

At Honeydew Farm they raise chickens for meat and eggs, pigs, and even a few cows. They also have a dog, cats, and rabbits and are going to even try raising rabbits for meat. On top of all the animals they have an enormous garden that they grow all their own veggies to freeze and enjoy all winter long.

My children had a wonderful time, their favorites were horseback riding and riding on a homemade train behind a 4-wheeler. In between fun we enjoyed delicious homemade soups, muffins, and deserts. Here are some of the pictures of our great day!

Here is my little girl Adelaide looking like a pro!

HDF

Leon riding for the first time!

Mommy was just a little nervous…… Confused smile (Daddy and I walked along on each side)

HDF2

And our oldest Haley looking like a natural.

HDF3

And here is our oldest son Colton on the train, he isn’t as willing to try new things so he chose not to horseback ride, but loved riding on the train!

HDF4

And Leon and Daddy having fun on the train too.

HDF5

Since it was a day of homemade food and all natural living I was invited to share my Shaklee products with everyone. I made protein smoothies using Shaklee 180 protein powder for everyone to try and met lots of new people, including a new friend there sharing her business too!

HDF6

We left Honeydew Farm with full bellies and completely exhausted, the sign of a fun filled day!

Have a happy day!

Relieving Stress As A Stay At Home Mom

As moms we all need to find ways to relieve stress in our busy, hectic lives but as stay at home moms we sometimes face different challenges. We are around our children 24 hours a day, we are always on call as I like to say! It definitely has its benefits but today I want to talk about its draw backs and how we can manage our stress as stay at home moms.
Some days start out amazing and just fall apart slowly and some days just start out crazy and never stop!
Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of good moments and those are what carry me through my days but they are only just moments, rarely an entire day. Being with our children day in and day out finds most of us stressed to our max and when the hubby finally gets home we are a hot mess! Usually throwing our children at them and saying “you need to take him, I am going crazy”!
What if we were to find little ways, little moments throughout our day to relieve that built up stress so when our husbands come home we are mostly calm and happy to see HIM not relieved because it is someone to take the kids for us? I don’t know about you but I am so grateful to my husband for working so hard every day to support our family so I can do what we feel is best by me staying home with the children. I don’t want him thinking I hate what I do and can’t wait for them all to go to school, because I really don’t feel that way I just have moments. Well I want to share with you a few of the ways I find time in my day to unwind, de-stress, and recover from the craziness of my dear children! Sometimes it is only a moment, or 5-10 minutes but let me tell you sometimes that is all it takes to get you back on track.
  • If you are going nuts and just need to take a shower or just breathe for a few minutes take your infant or toddler and put them in their crib with a few toys and books, turn on some music for them and let them play while you shower, get dressed, empty the dishwasher alone, switch the laundry………whatever it is you need to do without help for 10-15 minutes. This is what I always did with all three of my kids so I could take a shower alone everyday. I started at a young age and they never complained but if they are older and not used to doing it just kindly explain to them what you are doing and just go and do it. Even if they fuss and cry, as long as you know they are in a safe place for a short time it won’t hurt them, they will eventually get used to it and it truly will be relaxing. If they are no longer in a crib, gate them in their room, just make sure it is safe.
  • Have someone you can call! This has always been huge for me! A friend, your mom, your sister, your husband, although for me a female is usually a better option as they understand us a little better. We do not need to do this alone, lean on your family and friends! A support system is key, in my opinion, to surviving motherhood. Even a 5 minute conversation with another adult can leave you feeling calmer, give it a try, make time for you!
  • Take a bath. Put the kids to bed have your hubby be on call for a little while and go take a hot bath and relax. I like to turn on some relaxing music so if the kids are having trouble sleeping I don’t have to hear everything that is going on. Just let go and let dad take control for a little while. This may be something that only happens once a week but put it on the schedule and take some time for you!
Bath2
  • My last tip is just something I enjoy and helps me relax at the most stressful time of the day for me. Have a glass of wine. I enjoy a glass when I am preparing dinner some nights. I don’t know what it is but it calms me, and no it is not because I am getting drunk Smile I only have a small amount, I still need to function at tip top shape for several hours yet.
Wine2
As busy moms we always put everyone and everything else before us. Find what works for you and take a few minutes each day to put your well being first. We cannot be good wives, mothers, or people if we don’t take time for us. Everyone around you will appreciate this not look down on you for thinking of you! Be kind to yourself, you deserve it!
I would love to hear from you! What do you do to de-stress? How will these tips help you be a better mom? Comment below!

A Healthy Breakfast: Banana Bread

What kid doesn’t love banana bread?!?!?!?
Banana Bread 2
I know mine sure do and with this amazing recipe I found, (on Pinterest of coarse, thanks to 8wks to a Better You Recipe,) it is healthy, delicious, and filling! I just made it the day before so not only did it make a great breakfast the kids had it as a snack too. It would also be very easy to make this on the weekend, with the kids, and freeze until you are ready to use, just take it out the night before and leave to thaw on the counter. Also if you are anything like me you always have plenty of bananas lying around! What really drew me to this specific recipe though is it is made with whole wheat flour, which we have been trying to switch over to, and instead of sugar and oil it uses honey and unsweetened applesauce. Now it was a little blander than most banana bread recipes but not tasteless bland, it was still very delicious!
Snack
So here is what you will need:
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (I substituted 1/2 cup of flour for a 1/2 cup of ground flax seed)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar free applesauce
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 3 mashed overripe bananas
1.Preheat oven to 350* and grease a bread pan.
2.In a bowl combine flour, (flax seed, if you are using it), baking soda, and salt.
3.In another bowl combine applesauce and honey, stir in eggs and mashed bananas, mix well.
4.Then mix your dry ingredients and wet ingredients until moist, don’t over mix.
5.Pour batter into prepared bread pan.
6.Bake for 60-65 minutes until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
7.Cool in pan for 10 minutes, take out and place on wire cooling rack to cool completely.
Mmmm

I hope you and your children enjoy this as much as we did!

Making Breakfast Simple Yet Nutritious

As a mom, whether working or stay at home we all want our children to have a good healthy start to their day, especially if they are in school. So one way to be sure I get my children off to a good start is by making them something that will “stick to their ribs” as my mom always said. You may hear me talk about my mom a lot in this 31 day series, the reason for that is not only is she a phenomenal mom she has always been an amazing role model for me. She is why I am a stay at home mom, without her amazing example I wouldn’t be where I am as a mother!
So one thing I always do for my children is get their day off to a great start by making them a healthy, protein filled breakfast.
For those of you moms, especially working moms, who say you just don’t have time I will give you all a few tips to help make this happen more often than not. We all need those quick go to meals for those really tough days but if you set yourself up for success you won’t fail!
Tip #1: Make their lunches the night before. This has been a lifesaver for me! It is amazing how much doing this one thing will completely change your mornings.
Tip #2: Get up at least 10 minutes before waking the children. This will give you the few minutes you need to wake up and get your mind focused on the task ahead. If you are really ambitious get up even earlier and take your shower.
Tip #3: Set the children’s clothes out the night before. This assures no arguing in the morning about what they will wear and one less thing to stress you out.
Tip #4: Always have the same routine in the morning. Get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush hair and teeth. Or whatever works for you but have the same order everyday, that way the kids always know what to expect, no surprises.
So now that we have a few tips for you to set yourself up for success we will get back to healthy breakfasts. Our main go to meal for school days is smoothies! I would say 4 out of 5 school days we do smoothies. There are so many varieties they never get bored with them. Here are some of our favorites!
Smoothie 1
Smoothie 2
Some of our favorite ingredients are:
Frozen Blueberries
Frozen Strawberries
Frozen Peach Puree
Frozen Avocado Puree
Fresh Bananas
Greek Yogurt – I always add either this or the Kefir, that’s how it is high in protein and keeps them full.
Kefir – this is a high protein yogurt type drink
Milk
All I do is put 2-4 of the fruits and always one cube of avocado into my Magic Bullet, or a blender would work great too, and blend until smooth enough to drink it from a straw, no chunks. These are just the main fruits I have around at all times, you can really put in any kinds. My kids tend to dislike things like raspberries and blackberries because of the seeds but would also taste great if your kids don’t mind, mine just tend to be a little picky.
Why do we use so many frozen fruits? We use mostly frozen fruits because we like them nice and cold. Sometimes if we only have fresh fruit I will even add ice to make it colder. Its is also easier to keep frozen fruits, they last much longer. If I ever have fruit lying around that I just don’t get to using in time, before it goes bad, I will puree it and the freeze it in ice cube trays, then add it to the smoothies.
What I love best about making the kids smoothies is how easy they are to make, it literally from start to finish takes me 5 minutes. Now what healthy, homemade breakfast can you make in less than 10 minutes? Some of our other favorites are whole wheat pancakes with greek yogurt on the side and scrambled eggs. I also like to make breads and muffins the day before and serve them for breakfast. By using the tips above to make your morning easier it makes it possible to put a little more time into making something healthy.
Good luck!

5 Simple Steps to Get Your Kids to Eat Healthy!

Getting your kids to eat healthy foods………

Across Facebook and Mommy blogs this is a constant topic of struggle for so many families. How do you do it so many people ask? Well I will give you the simple yet effective steps I have taken in my home to get my children to eat healthily! It should really be as simple as saying to your child, “Eat this! I am your mom and you do as I say”. As most of us moms have learned if we say something like that to our children will do the exact opposite, if you have hard headed children like I do! So I have taken a different approach, and I haven’t come to this conclusion overnight. I started out as a young mom, 23, and knew what I was doing for the most part but like all of us we learn and grow as we get older. I now feel like I really know what I want for my children and family and strive daily to give them the best!

The first way to get them to eat healthy food is…….

1. Have ONLY healthy foods available!

PicMonkey Collage (2) (1)

It is really that simple. If there is only good food to choose from then they can only eat good foods. Now for each of us it may be different as to what we consider healthy and allowable. I will leave that up to you. If you don’t want them eating fruit snacks for a snack then don’t even have them in the house. It may be difficult at first for them to get used to the change but be persistent and they will adjust easier than you think.

2. Make healthy foods easily accessible.

Keep snacks for the kids at their height so they can easily reach what you want them to have. Now that doesn’t mean stick the junk food on the top shelf where they can’t reach it, that would be breaking rule #1! It just makes it easier for you to say go and grab something without you having to do everything. Its all about making mom’s (or dad’s) life easier!

photo 4 (3) (1)

photo 5.1 (1)

Another tip to keep healthy foods accessible is to have all fruits and veggies clean and ready to eat. After I grocery shop I take about a half hour to wash all my fruit and veggies and get it put away. (In the picture below you can see all my fruit drying). I never put it away before I wash it! The extra bit of time it takes to wash it all at once in invaluable! See here how I wash my produce naturally.

3. Only buy fresh fruits and veggies.

I have ceased to by any canned fruits or vegetables. Yes they are so easy but the taste and quality just isn’t the same. A great way to get your kids to love their vegetables is to buy it fresh and steam them. After you do this you will not want to go back! Also have a, you must at least try everything rule. I have never been a clear your plate mom but I at least ask that they try it. Eventually they will learn to like most things.

photo 3 (1) (1)

4. Have your kids help prepare food.

I have tried to get my kids to eat things and they would refuse or say they didn’t like it and then make the same thing and have them help and they love it. There is something about kids needing to see what goes into making it, especially new things, for them to want to try them. Not to mention they love to help!

photo 3 (3) (1) (1)

photo 1 (7) (1) (1)

5. Allow them to help you shop.

If your kids are young and not in school yet or you shop when they are home a great way to teach them to make healthy choices is by putting that choice in their hands. Either give them a list of what you want them to shop for or tell them they can pick out something as long as it is a healthy choice. Kids love to make their own decisions, it makes them feel like they have some control of their life.

I hope these tips help lead your family and children to live a healthier lifestyle! I would love to hear your thoughts, share in the comments below!

Be positive, happy, and excited about new changes and you kids will follow!

Crockpot Strawberry Applesauce

photo 1 (1) (1)

It is that time of year again where I am feeling like cooking, baking, and cleaning like crazy! I don’t know if its because the big kids are back to school or because fall is near but I am feeling domestic lately! Last year I shared with you a crockpot applesauce recipe that is just amazing and so easy!

If you haven’t tried it yet but would love to check it out here.

I have really been focusing on healthy eating for our family and getting away from processed foods as much as we can. My kids really love applesauce and it is great to throw into their lunches too but I wanted to make it for them instead of buy it and I’m going to be doing this from now on. Not only was it easy but it tastes amazing! It takes about 10-15 minutes of prep time and you are done and have a homemade, delicious snack for your family!

I basically did the same thing as my original recipe just changed up a couple things.

Ingredients:

6-8 Apples (we used our favorite, Gala)

1/2 cup of water

1/2 – 3/4 cup of sugar (this I changed a little, I will share that below)

1 – 1 1/2 cups of fresh or frozen strawberries (I used frozen ones that I had picked this summer)

photo 2 (3) (1)

Directions:

1. Peel, core, and dice apples. Place into crockpot.

2. Add strawberries.

3. Lastly, add water and sugar.

4. Cook on low for 6-8 hours, stirring occasionally. After fully cooked slightly mash with potato masher until desired consistency.

5. Serve warm, cold, and in small containers for lunches.

 ~ What’s Different! ~

Not only did I add strawberries to our applesauce this time I also added organic pure cane sugar instead of white sugar. I love the taste of it and I love doing something healthier for my family!

After we had it warm with dinner I stored it in small cups for easy snacks for the kids and also to easily throw in their lunches!

3 Tips to a Healthy School Year

Whether your kids just started school or will be soon as moms we all want the same thing for our kids, health and happiness and a smooth transition to a new year. If you are anything like me you would love for your kids to live in a little bubble when they are away from home! I also worry about the germs and sicknesses that they may bring home and share with mommy, daddy, and the little one.  Today I want to share with you some of the ways I try to keep my kids in that little health and safety bubble even when they are away from me.

Healthy Eating!

If my kids are eating a healthy diet their body does not have to work as hard to keep them healthy. So for us it is fruits and/or veggies with every meal and always an option for snacks is a must. One secret that I will share with you is if it is readily available they will eat it! Keep things cut up and on the counters or table. Another thing I always do is as soon as I get home from the grocery store before I put it away I wash all my fruits and veggies so no one has worry about that. If you are interested in how I wash them check this out.

Leftover

A Good Multi-Vitamin!

No matter what we do we can’t provide our children with 100% of what their bodies need to grow and be healthy. Especially in a day in age when organic foods can be really pricey. We can do little things like plant and grow some of our own fruits and veggies but most of us can’t provide our family with an entire years worth so we rely on what we can afford to do. So one thing I have been doing for almost a year now is a really good multi vitamin for my whole family. I partner with the #1 natural nutrition company so naturally I would recommend the vitamins that they offer, but it is really more than that. Like I said I have been giving these to my family for almost a year now so I have seen the results of what a really good vitamin can do. This past winter and this summer my kids have hardly been sick at all! We have had minor colds and that is it! When I say minor I mean a few sniffles and/or runny noses for a couple days but no doctors visits because of them. (We will save what I do for myself and husband for another post).

Here is the multivitamin my kids have been taking:

Increditvites2

They are Shaklee's Incredivites, and they have been incredible! They are the only children’s chewable multivitamin powered with lactoferrin, an immune booster to help prevent kids from getting sick. The other important vitamin is vitamin c.

Vit C3

I did a little math the other day and for these two items, for one child, it is less than $20 a month!

For a trip to the doctor and a prescription for one child it would be almost $200!

You do the math and tell me which is the better deal….

A Good Nights Sleep!

Oh so important for health and a productive day at school. I am very strict when it comes to bedtime in my house. I am so strict it is very hard for me to switch to a summer schedule, I do now that they are a little older but we have been getting back to a normal routine for the past few weeks in preparation for school starting. When I say a good nights sleep I am talking no less than 10 hours usually more like 11. Since my kids have to get up at 7am they are in bed by 8pm. That may be more difficult if you have kids that go to school earlier than mine do or get on the bus early, so in that I am lucky. I also enjoy some peace and quite in the evenings! Smile

I would love to answer any questions you may have about this post or hear what you do to keep your kids healthy throughout the year! Thank you for stopping by!

I Am Back!!

It is the beginning of August and I am starting fresh and new!

I have not blogged since early June! I can’t believe how fast time flies! Well it is about time I got back to it, don’t you think? If you are new to following me you may not know that my husband lost his job in early May. It was quite devastating for our family and it took A LOT of faith to get us through but my husband found an amazing job and he will be back to work starting this week. It has been fun having him around all summer and the kids are going to have a hard time adjusting to him back to work but it will be great to be back on a schedule. I am not really strict especially in the summer but I do like things a certain way and having my husband around all summer has kind of thrown things off, for the good but I am ready to have things back to normal. Smile

I have some really exciting things to share this coming month and I am excited you are here!. Right now I am just going to try and get back to blogging! I will share things with you soon, stay tuned you won’t want to miss it!

Below is a picture of our family on a vacation we took just last week to Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin. If you are from this area I highly recommend going there, it is beyond beautiful!

photo (16)

We did a lot of hiking, this was one of the highest points we climbed to. Isn’t it beautiful?? We wanted to get in a camping trip before my husband had to start work. We will definitely be going back, hopefully next summer!

Have a great day!

Feature Friday ~ Scour Off

Welcome Friends! I am happy to have you here for another addition of Feature Friday where each week I share with you a different Shaklee product. I share with you how I have used it in my home and how it is helping my family for the better!

1

Today I am going to share with you another product from the Shaklee’s Get Clean Line. It is called Scour Off. It is an all natural scouring agent, that is very effective yet safe to use in your home and around your family. It contains no toxic or harmful ingredients and works so well! I am very interested in doing what is best and safest for my family but I also want it to work. I don’t want to say I use it only because it is safe. Today I want to share with you some of the ways I have used it in my home, these are not pictures off the internet, they are actual examples of how I have used it.

My top 3 uses for Scour off are:

1) Sink scouring

2) Stove top and oven scouring

3) Bathtub scouring (I don’t have before and after pictures of how I have used it in my shower but it is great for rust stains, soap build up, and any other scouring you made need to do in your shower and tub.)

Below is a picture of how shiny and beautiful my stainless steel sink looks after scouring it with Scour Off!

2

Don’t you just love how it shines!

Below is the bottom of my oven before and after scouring it with Scour Off! I also sprayed it with Basic H before scouring it to help loosen any baked on grime. You can learn step by step instructions as to how I cleaned my oven here.

3

Here is one great reason for your husband to love Scour Off too!

4

What a difference!

Another great example of how it can save you time in the kitchen is to use it to scour out your crockpot pan and baking dishes.

5

Some other great things I like about Scour off are:

It smells great! Unlike some scouring agents or pastes that leave you choking, Scour Off is made from cherry pits so you will never feel like you are inhaling toxic chemicals.

It is inexpensive and will last forever!

Thank you again for joining me for Feature Friday! I love to share with you how to make your home healthier and happy!

Feature Friday ~ Basic G ~ All Natural Germicide

Welcome back to Feature Friday, where each week I share with you a new Shaklee product that is changing my life and my family’s life for the better! Today I am going to share with you another product from Shaklee’s Get Clean Line. For me this is another must have for my home and family, with kids and pets in the home it is important to keep things clean and germ free, especially in the bathrooms and kitchen. I no longer have Bleach, Lysol, or any other disinfectant/germicide in my home except for Shaklee’s Basic G. A couple weeks ago I shared with you Basic H (you can find that story here), a super concentrated all purpose cleaner that does hundreds of things, the only thing it doesn’t do is kill germs, so I also have Basic G in my home for the areas I like to kill germs and keep them away.

1

Are you under the belief that just because it is sold in stores that it is safe for you, your home, your family, and also your planet?? Well think again! There is no Federal Drug Administration for cleaning products. If you are required to use bleach in the work place gloves and masks are required to do so. How many of you wear gloves and a mask to disinfect your home? I sure never did! Did you know that to dispose of unused household cleaners you need to take them to a toxic waste site? I didn’t until I found Shaklee’s all natural, safe cleaners and was trying to find out how to dispose of my old cleaners. I am not going to go on about the dangers of Bleach and other disinfectants, if you are still curious after reading this please look it up and learn more.

What I am trying to tell you is that these products ARE NOT SAFE for your family! The good news though is that there is an alternative and it is not only safe for you, your family, your home, and planet but it is all natural, and it will truly save you money in the long run. Yes you heard me right. It will save you money!

Here is what Basic G can do for you:

  • It kills up to 99% of bacteria

  • It is non-flammable, non-toxic, and biodegradable

Cleans, Disinfects, & Deodorizes in 1 easy step!

Basic G has a three year shelf life. Its residual effectiveness lasts up to three days after application. Chlorine Bleach used as a disinfectant is effective no more than one hour. Great wherever disinfectants are used!

Basic G is the most effective!

  • Kills 44 types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses-including HIV virus
  • Use in bathrooms-toilets, garbage, diaper pails, appliances and pet areas
  • Keep in spray bottle at kitchen sink-spray counter tops, cutting boards, faucet and refrigerator handling after preparing eggs, chicken, and meats to kill Salmonella
  • Kills several animal viruses- including Canine Parvovirus and Feline Leukemia
  • Use as an air freshener
  • Safe for stainless steel and aluminum
  • Spray on carpets and vacuum to eliminate odor

Like I said earlier, it can save you money too!

1 qt. of Basic G makes over 600 16oz bottles of antibacterial Cleaner like Lysol
1 qt. of Basic G makes 454 16oz bottles of disinfectant spray like Clorox

Tough on germs! Gentle on the Earth!

The two main ways I use Basic G is in a spray bottle for my bathrooms, counters, sinks, and anywhere else I want to kill germs.

I also love to make my own disinfecting wipes! Here is my recipe for that:

What you will need to make them:

  • Paper Towel, I use Walmarts Great Value brand, it is a giant roll, and is exactly like Bounty but cheaper.
  • An air tight  container, I use a 3qt container, but whatever will hold a half roll of paper towel will work.
  • Measuring Spoons
  • 2 cup measuring cup
  • 2 cups of water
  • Basic G
  • Basic H, I add this also for extra cleaning power

2.2

What  do:

  1. Cut roll of paper towel in half. It works best if you use a sharp, non-serrated knife and saw back and forth until you have cut through the paper towel. You should have two equal halves. You only need one at a time though, save the other for later.
  2. Pull cardboard tube out of center of paper towel, this may seem strange to do before but I have found that if you don’t take it out before and get it wet it makes the towel smell skunky after a few days.
  3. Place paper towel in air tight container.
  4. In two cup measuring cup fill with 2 cups of water.
  5. Add to water, 1 teaspoons on Basic G and 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of Basic H. After you have been using Basic H for a while you will feel comfortable deciding how much works for you.
  6. Pour water and Basic H and G mixture over top of paper towels. Let sit until paper towels have completely soaked up water mixture, this should only take a few minutes.

You can use you disinfecting wipes wherever you would have used Clorox or Lysol wipes, anywhere you want to disinfect. They are great for travel too!
