Day 20: Chore Charts

Today I made chore charts for my children who are 5 and 7 years old. I made these same charts for them to remind them of the things they need to do each morning to get ready, you can see that post here on my posting about organizing for school. I have been wanting my children to have established chores each day, I have just never found a system that I really like or that continues to work for our family. I made the daily reminder charts and they use them every day! So I thought why not use the same concept for chores! Here is how I did it.

Step 1: Fold a thick piece of paper almost in half the long way leaving a small lip to write on and for a place to put the tacks to hang the chart.

Step 2: Open folded piece of paper and cut into four equal pieces up to the fold line. These cuts should be made on the smaller half of the paper.

Step 3: Make a chore list.  I first searched for age appropriate chores, my kids are close in age so I picked chores that they both could do so they can rotate chore charts on a weekly basis. You can also also make more than one chart if you only have one child so you can give him/her a variety of chores to do. Then find or draw pictures to go with the chores you have chosen. I found the images on Google images, I used all cartoon pictures, there is no right or wrong way just whatever you prefer. Print these images out so they fit on your chore chart and then cut them all out.

Step 4: Choose which pictures you want on each chart and glue them down with a glue stick.

You will be gluing them to the inside of the folded paper on the half that is not cut.

Step 5: On the cut pieces of paper on the inside, write down what each chore is.

Step 6: Close the flaps on you chore chart and write the word DONE on the outside of each flap. This way when they are closed it shows that they are done with the chore. I also added at the very top the words Chore Chart 1 & Chore Chart 2, you can label them with your child's name or whatever works for you.

Step 7: Put magnets on the top and bottom of each flap so they stay closed when done. Magnets work great because you can do them one handed, if you used Velcro you might tear the paper. I found this at a craft store for really cheap, one side is sticky so there is no gluing involved.
